Santa and I are working to upgrade this budding triathlete’s pony:

Unfortunately, we’re not having much luck on eBay or any of the other online sites. Being a cheapskate, I don’t want to pay $700+ for a new bike that this 10-year-old will outgrow in a year. At this point it looks like I may have to (gulp) build her a bike on a used road frame (47 cm or below?) with 650cc wheels.
Any suggestions from the bike wrenchers?

Have you checked outbikesdirect yet?
Hak,
What size are you looking for - how tall is she now? Let me know and I’ll see what I can come up with.

Hi Hak,
There is a lot of options between the BMX bike she is on in the photo and a full blown tri bike. Gears alone are an improvement and I’m with you on the outgrowing it in a year thing. Have you thought about a good used mountain bike? A good one will still be fairly light, especially in her frame size. A pair of narrow slicks and it should roll well. It looks a little goofy but you can put areo bars on it. That’s my two cents worth. Good Luck.

Doug,
I’m not interested in a true tri bike for her. I want a road bike that I can put clip-ons on down the road. Right now, the push is to get her out of the BMX bike she has outgrown in 18 months!

I have a bike that’s a superteeny frame with 700c wheels. My point is that you can get her a small frame with 700c wheels - and at least if you build it up, you can save some parts when she needs a bigger frame.
I feel your pain - my pikachus are ready for new bikes. At least we are still in the wal-mart sizes…
