RACE PREVIEW: Cyprus Triathlon, April 12, 2009

Kypros Nicolaou

Cyprian triathlete and race organizer Kypros Nicolaou

Triathlon is truly a global sport. Whether you want to travel overseas to add an exotic venue to your race resume, or use an international race as an excuse to take a family vacation (“Hey honey, let’s take the family for a week in Cyprus. Well, looky here. There just happens to be a race that very same week! What a coincidence!”), it’s every athlete’s dream to race in a foreign land.

With the state of the current economy being in the toilet, you may not be able to justify the expense of an airline ticket to fly to Cyprus this April, but it would definitely be worth the trip. According to Kypros Nicolaou, triathlete and one of the organizers of the Cyprus Triathlon, the island’s 200-member triathlon community may be small, but their energy is large.

On April 12, 2009 the Cyprus Triathlon at Makronisos will hold it’s inaugural presentation at the turquoise colors of this south east part of the island. Organizers have strategically positioned this super-sport event ( swim 1.5km / bike 40 km/ run 10km and swim 750m / bike 20 km/ run 5km) at the picturesque Makronisos beach area. According to Nicolaou, the race will cater to all types of active people, from the fast triathlete to the easygoing exerciser who wants to enjoy a wonderful week in sunny Cyprus and at the same time have a go at a multisport challenge along the refreshing waters and flat course of this Mediterranean island.

Cyprus is blessed with “triathlon weather” for most of the year. With a mild and temperate climate in the months from November through April, a triathlon early in the season can entertain many appetites. An early warm-up and tune-up for the fast triathlete that wants to jump early in the race season and wants to prepare with race specific events, and on the other end of the spectrum for the recreational triathlete who wants a break from cold weather northern climates and a nice warm getaway with multi-sport activities along the way to energize body and mind. Athletes and their families can enjoy island cuisines, golden sunny beaches, friendly atmosphere and people, and a warm and fuzzy getaway from the cold and rainy Northern European weather

Securing participation to this event is not a hard task since organizers have ensured that a simple and functional website is operating to welcome inquiries and on-line registrations. The web site is www.cyprustriathlon.cytrifed.org and it is open for all of the above. Registration for the event opens from November 11 – February 15.

  1. RE: “This morning while making my blog rounds, I came across this great post from Craig Weller of Barefoot Fitness. Weller talks about the moment when you face your personal Waterloo and includes the following quote a Navy SEAL gave to a group of students during his retirement ceremony: “Something is out there waiting for you and it will completely destroy you. The time will come that you don’t think you can possibly go on. Please. Please, don’t quit. It will end, and you can make it to the other side. Just don’t quit.” Click here to read the full post. #”

As a long running, mountain walking, summer and winter barefoot guy ..thank you for the link. I can relate, by persoanl experience, with everything he notes in his “Why Barefoot Fitness?”

No, I am not as foot fit in the extreme as the Kenyan runners..

I will post something soon to it.

Continued good succes in your works. Happy holidays and Merry Christmas to all.
