The Zen dog & other thoughts on meditation

As a formerly high-strung individual who often endured long bouts of depression, it took me quite a while to get some sort of handle on my monkey mind. How people silence those inner dancing primates varies. Some sedate the little boogers with Xanax, others keep them busy with bananas (figuratively and literally), and others plop down in front of the TV to keep them entertained. My dog Max, however, simply just empties his mind…

Inappropriate yoga guy

I’m caught up in some more housecleaning here on the site to get things re-built in a more creatively interesting (at least to me) and visually appealing site. So again, please bare with me while things may flip-flop on the graphics side for a day or two.
For those of us who practice yoga, I thought [...]

Using meditation to fix overpronation

Just about every type of outdoor multisport activity involves some sort of running. Whether running is the main sport or simply part of your training toolbox, learning how to run efficiently is critical to your success and ability to stay injury free.
For such a simple and supposedly natural activity, running can be quite problematic for [...]

Think of our bodies [...]

Mindfulness Moment #1: Putting on your underwear

One of the main tenets of the “here and now” crowd is mindfulness. No matter what you’re doing, make sure your brain is fully engaged in the here and now. Be in the moment.
Coach Steve Ilg often encourages his students to start their mindfulness practice with brushing their teeth. When brushing your teeth, just brush [...]

Thoughts on meditation

Having completed two weeks of summer semester chemistry (16 weeks of material crammed into six), I can look back and reflect that my schedule went to shit.
My training volumes significantly dropped the past week. Yet, I’m OK with that.
Really.
It’s all about priorities. Medical school is very competitive and I need to rack up every A [...]

Staying sane

With my family, work, school, freelance and triathlon training schedule all competing for my time, people have often asked me how I stay sane through this.
Easy.
I practice meditation.
I’d like to say this solo practice provides quality “me” time, in a day that is otherwise dedicated to the needs of others. But I can’t.

My other Significant Other always accompanies me [...]
