Once upon a time there was a boy who dreamed he could be a superhero. By the time he was five, he knew he couldn’t be super strong and he was afraid of being bitten by a radioactive spider, but he knew he could be super fast. Because he was super fast. He was faster than all of the neighbor kids and his father proudly told him that he must have inherited his speed from the Old Man because he used to be the fastest kid on the block too. The boy would challenge all who dared enter his back yard to a 100-yard dash from the apple tree to the back porch. Of course, the boy won each race because he was the fastest runner in the world and was soon going to save the world from evil with his amazing speed.

My daughter paid our share of triathlon “community rent” on Sunday by pulling a five-hour shift on the Silverman bike course.
